Soekarno's House

Location

Jl. Pandean IV No.40, Peneleh, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, East Java 60274

Sukarno's childhood home is located on Jalan Peneleh Gang VII No. 40, Surabaya, not far from the H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto Museum. This house was Soekarno's residence around 1916–1921 when he studied at HBS Surabaya and studied directly with H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto about politics, nationalism, and the spirit of resistance against colonialism. The house is designed in the colonial Indies style with wooden walls and large ventilation, consisting of a simple living room, bedroom, and kitchen with an old stove. It was in this house that the young Soekarno honed his oratory skills, discussed with Sarekat Islam figures such as Semaoen and Musso, and learned to understand the suffering of the Indonesian people during the colonial period, which became the foundation of his national ideology before becoming the Proclaimer of the Republic of Indonesia. Although not an official museum, this house still stands and is maintained by the residents with visiting permits for the public who want to learn about the history of Soekarno's struggle in Surabaya. This house is an important witness in the journey of Indonesian history because it is the place where Soekarno's nationalist thoughts and national spirit were formed, as well as being one of the historical traces of Indonesia's struggle for independence that needs to be remembered and preserved.
